Proud New Member of the Dollar Shave Club

I use my razors for way, way, way too long.

My current one has probably been in use for around 3-6 months. Shameful, I know.
Granted, it still does a sufficient job, but I'm a grown man and my face deserves better.

Especially when I want to trim into a 'stache, like for Movember or Cinco de Mustache.

Plus, summer is upon us and I'm looking to do some triathlon training and maybe a race or two this year.
Which, yes, means leg shaving. Don't judge.

On the suggestion and referral of my buddy Scott, I joined the Dollar Shave Club today.

You probably remember their awesome commercial from a while back:

I went with the $6/month, 4-blade option. But they also have $1/mo, 2-blade and $9/mo, 6-blade options.

And you can do every-other-month if you aren't too hairy. Figure I'll start monthly, though I'll probably end up switching to the every-other-month plan.

Each option comes with 4 cartridges, so that's plenty to get through a month or two, right?

Ladies, how does that price compare to what you pay? Would this work for you, or just for guys?

If y'all want in on this, you can CLICK HERE (full disclosure: I'll get a $5 referral credit, thanks!).

Happy shaving!

Happy Last Day of Movember 2012

Another year, another Movember.

Which means another 'stache, and (this time) a mullet to match.

I hope you all enjoyed the month's festivities, and I hope even more that you remembered the purpose behind this yearly event and maybe even discussed it with a few people to spread the message.

Men, get those prostates checked regularly and take care of your health.
Women, support your men and remind them to be vigilant in these areas.

And we'll see those wonderful/horrific/hilarious 'staches again next year!

Shave the Date: It's Movember First

Don't forget to shave tomorrow, fellas!

That way you'll start Movember on the right foot.

As your facial hair grows throughout the month, you can answer the inevitable inquiries (why are you growing that sweet and uber-manly 'stache?) by explaining it's to raise awareness for "men's health issues, specifically prostate and testicular cancer initiatives."

If you want to join the official Movember crew, you can do so at their website.

I'm probably going unofficial this year, but I'll host a shindig near the end of the month for us to celebrate our mustaches and support for those who have grown facial hair.

So start growing that fu manchu, and speak up when asked why you're indulging your manliness this month!

PS If you need one more reason to join the cause, even Tobias Funke is doing it.

PPS Or, if you're like me and it takes a solid 3 weeks to get anything decent, maybe don't shave. I won't tell anyone, as long as you don't tell on me.

Farewell, Movember 2011

I know some people had been awaiting the last day of Movember with bated breath.
Well the time to shave finally came.

My facial hair went from this beloved look:
To this clean and responsible look:
The 'stache will be missed.

Hasta Cinco de Mustache (aka Cinco de Mayo), mi amigo!

Should I try a different style instead of the horseshoe for the next time?

Movember Meet-and-Greet

Some elements are essential to a good party.
Comfortable location, fun friends, something to eat and drink.

And some elements contribute to a great party.
A large wall hanging to sign, mustache tree, fake mustaches, a photo booth.

The Movember Meet-and-Greet had all these things.
Plus, we were raising awareness for prostate and testicular cancer, as well as men's health in general.
With my wonderful co-hosts
I have to give a special shout out to Camille and Lindsey, without whom the party never would have been nearly as fun as it turned out to be. No one could ask for better co-hosts and friends.

Speaking of friends, there were lots that came over and celebrated with us, many rocking either their own or a felt die-cut 'stache for the evening, having some snacks, and taking advantage of the photo booth.
You know a party is a big deal when Mary makes an appearance.
A triumphant trio of horseshoe mustaches
I imagine this is what a European Union meeting looks like
Sometimes things get a little weird... just how we like it
Gotta represent with the real 'staches
I love this pic; all around great stuff
Yes, that's a Movember cake; thanks, Camille!
Hide yo' kids, hide yo' wife
Thanks for coming, friends! You love Movember and it loves you right back!

Until next year!

Movember Stache Update: Only 4 More Days

This morning, I decided to go all out for the last few days of Movember.
So I took this full goatee...
...and shaved it into this beauty.
Love it? Hate it?
How is yours (or your significant other's or your friend's) coming along?

Movember Mustache/Beard Guidance

We're half way through Movember, and I'm betting you've got some mildly decent (like me) or wildly impressive (probably most of you) facial hair growth by now.

If you haven't already, it may be time to consider some grooming, in lieu of shaggy all-over growth.

Here are a few graphics to keep in mind as you choose your style, especially if you still want to be date-able and/or not scare mothers and small children while walking around the neighborhood.
Does clicking on this make it bigger? If so, it's worth reading the descriptions.
Is it cause for concern that I currently have the 'goatee + mustache', but I think it's more fun to have 'the horseshoe aka the Hogan'? You should talk me out of shaving my chin.
My dad has pretty much always been in the range of Tom Selleck to Burt Reynolds.
Great choice, dad. A classic 'stache.

It's Movember. Time to Grow the 'Stache, Fellas!

Yes, it's that time again.
Time for gentlemen to start growing the 'stache to raise awareness for prostate and testicular cancers.
And time for you ladies to encourage this behavior and discussion of Movember's purpose.

So if you've always wanted to look like Tom Selleck, Hulk Hogan, Groucho Marx, Mike Ditka, Salvador Dali, Ned Flanders, Rollie Fingers, Yosemite Sam, or another of the countless famous mustached men, now's your chance. And it'll be for a good cause, too.

The Harvard Sailing Team, one of my favorite comedy troupes, said it this way.

Here's a somewhat less-entertaining, yet very informative, video about Movember.

How to participate:
  1. Shave tonight (October 31st) or tomorrow morning, and start growing the facial hair.
  2. When people ask about your facial hair, tell them you're raising awareness for prostate and testicular cancer, and encourage them to spread the word.
  3. Ladies, give a mustached man a smooch, or at least a compliment for his mustache-growing efforts.
  4. If you'd like, give a donation or attend a Gala event if there's one happening near you.
I'm shooting for something in this range, if not even better.
PS: I may throw a Movember party on November 18th. Location and time TBD.

Best/Worst Halloween Costume?

If you haven't seen this video, it's about time you did.
Two questions:
1) If I acquired an alto sax and learned how to play "Careless Whisper", would it be the best Halloween costume of all time, or the worst? I kinda don't think there's any gray area.
2) If my friend Matt is already replicating this (not sure if for Halloween or just for fun), does that mean I can't?

Oh, and my apologies for getting this tune stuck in your head all day.

StyleWatch: Ben Affleck's Impression of Keith Urban

I don't pay too much attention to celeb styles, but this one struck me as funny.

Apparently it's for his newest movie role in Argo (which he's also directing), but I sure hope Ben Affleck's style impression of Keith Urban doesn't become permanent.
Let's leave those locks to the rockers, Aussies, and Justin Biebers of the world.

Big Birthday for Pops

This is really late in the day, but I wanted to give a quick blog shout-out to my pops.

It's a big birthday for him, though I won't say the number (this is a sure-fire way to show how much I love him).
Happy xxth birthday, Dad!

Feliz Cinco de Mustache

The long-awaited day has come.
It's finally Cinco de Mustache!
Or Cinco de Mayo, but I prefer the former.

Doesn't matter to me that most of Mexico doesn't recognize it as an official holiday.
Note: Technically, only the state of Puebla does. Weird, huh?

Well it's a fun holiday, and I'm excited for my running group tonight and everybody sporting the mustache they've been working on.
Here's mine:
Delightful, isn't it?

Honestly, I can't wait to shave it off in the morning,
But I'll enjoy it for tonight!

You Might Be a Redneck...

Last night, I asked my friend Mary to give me a haircut.
But not just any haircut.
I wanted a mullet.

She was kind enough to oblige.

So what do you think?

It's more of a Euro-mullet than straight-up redneck style,
but that might just be splitting hairs at this point
(oh how I love puns).
