Unprepared for a Great Love

Why is it that we often don't understand what we had, and how great it was, until it's too late?

Not that we always do that. But sometimes we do. And sometimes it's painful to realize that what we didn't properly value at the time could have been a life-changer.

While this can be the case with job opportunities, stock investments, travel choices, and many others, I think we see it most clearly in matters of the heart, don't we?

I had a great opportunity with a woman that I like-liked, and I blew it.

Just that simple.

It was right in front of me, and, for a myriad of reasons, I wasn't prepared for what may have been the most important choices and love of my life.

That sucks to recognize, when it now may be too late.

A part of me still hopes there is a chance at reconciliation and a return to us, as I now feel prepared to love fully and make the sacrifices and changes necessary to be the man she wants and deserves.

If that isn't enough, then so be it.

I am and will be ready.

My next chance, I don't want to be caught unprepared for a great love.

    1. Thanks, Rachel. The only option is to soldier on with hope in our hearts for a brighter tomorrow, right?

  2. I think I've dated a couple of "you's" - it sucks to be on the other end too. I'm so sorry. And please do keep that resolution to be ready the next time!

  3. does she read this blog? this post should be sufficient. sucks that hindsight is always so clear, right? but think of it this way - if you're meant to be, it will work out. if not, you will find another person even better suited for you though it may seem impossible now. i read a quote the other day that went along the lines of "every decision will either lead to success or education." i love that. no failures, just a learning experience!

    1. That's a great quote, Jen! I'm hoping she sees this post, and I've also done a little something to reach out to her (flowers to her office). And you're right, everything works out as it should.

  4. Oof, that one sucks, friend.

If it helps at all, I think we've all been there a time or two -- but if allowing someone great to get away meant we were doomed to not find someone else, no one would get married except for high school sweethearts. We all blow it (or are on the receiving end) now and then. :/ It's good that you realized it and will do better next time. And who knows? It still might work out with the girl you're talking about someday.

  5. Well put, Aaron. And true with so many. Its the art of seeing first, then doing.

Related song spark. Oldie but goodie.

When there's no one left to leave you,
even you don't quite believe you
That's when nothing can deceive you
While you see a chance take it,
    find romance...

  6. I agree with Jen, hopefully she reads this blog cause it's def sufficient enough! If it's right it could still always work out for you and her, especially if your feeling is still so strong for her! I say pick up the phone and call her and tell her how you feel, there's nothing to lose to just try. If she doesn't feel the same way, then there is someone out there better for you, any girl would be lucky to have you. You are truly an amazing man!

    1. Ditto! Whenever a sister/friend calls me for relationship advice my first comment is "well, did you tell them you feel this way?" The answer is usually no. Any relationship is either going to work out or not. Those are the only two options. So you have nothing to lose, especially at this point, by just putting it all out there on the line. Pull a Say Anything and hold a radio over your head, so to speak. Declare it all, leave out nothing. If it's meant to be, it will happen. If nothing changes, you're no worse off than you are now. Good luck!
