<br />
It's May the 4th! aka Star Wars Day!<br />

Here are a couple day-appropriate memes I found:<br />

Hopefully you're doing something fun to celebrate, maybe having a party with a Jar Jar Binks piñata and cutting cake with a lightsaber. At the least, have a moment of silence for Han Solo (RIP).<br />

<br />
And now we have the teaser trailer:<br />
<center>
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Wji-BZ0oCwg" width="560"></iframe></center>
<br />
I'm giddy as a school boy.<br />
<br />
While these non-linear movies (in terms of the Star Wars movie timelines) might confuse some, I am stoked to see the styles and stories of these characters, and to have a behind-the-scenes of what was touched on briefly way back when "A New Hope" debuted in 1977.<br />
<br />
The footage/style looks gritty and wild, which I love.<br />
<br />
It feels just right for what the Rebellion was at that point, and in line with the world that Luke and Han accidentally stepped into back on the remote planet of Tatooine.<br />
<br />
The crew looks great, and I love that elements of the Force don't seem to be pervasive. That's a pretty cool departure from all the previous films.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiuvlaYhI_1hhLUCn7f45GqeB1mh33v2-KflSdtnWa58d2MuBkg7BahKwjrb50djc7K-sUUShPOisK0bpZS164N3t2zRyqHrAagZWiZqfaNw6aDm-NfbUPd7ZfHT0UWdKyX1ZoI8bUqDih/s1600/rogue.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiuvlaYhI_1hhLUCn7f45GqeB1mh33v2-KflSdtnWa58d2MuBkg7BahKwjrb50djc7K-sUUShPOisK0bpZS164N3t2zRyqHrAagZWiZqfaNw6aDm-NfbUPd7ZfHT0UWdKyX1ZoI8bUqDih/s640/rogue.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
What do you think of the teaser trailer? Are you excited? Dismayed for some reason?<br />
Let me know your thoughts in the comments.<br />
<br />
Now hurry up and get here, December 16th!<br />

<br />
Last week, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waylon_Smithers" target="_blank">Waylon Smithers</a>, the beloved character from The Simpsons, came out of the closet.<br />
<br />
Though we've all known it for quite some time, I'm happy to see the intel canonized.<br />
<br />
Here's how the show let the cat officially out of the bag:<br />

<br />
Dinner at the <a href="http://www.theblindcafe.com/" target="_blank">Blind Cafe</a>, a traveling event, wherein you eat a meal completely in the dark.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHUewA9ICcuq5G7HE6s260aPMr5zg_ozgO54l4c5SIPnynF7aMrNihpy7TQGeMTnWsMzUc_2eGd56ZVqirz2XeZuY4VcPbdThp8lI0owx-gs_tVbuieTELUYdZYBrml22p99WM1MPqcE9F/s1600/NewBlindCafeLogo.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="152" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHUewA9ICcuq5G7HE6s260aPMr5zg_ozgO54l4c5SIPnynF7aMrNihpy7TQGeMTnWsMzUc_2eGd56ZVqirz2XeZuY4VcPbdThp8lI0owx-gs_tVbuieTELUYdZYBrml22p99WM1MPqcE9F/s400/NewBlindCafeLogo.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
It was an illuminating evening, and our discussion of the event afterwards was great.<br />
<br />
We talked about how we learned to create a mental map of our surroundings, especially where our food items were. We enjoyed having a greater degree of anonymity in the room, and how visual cues didn't obligate one to answer questions (particularly when the other people at the table can't remember your name, in order to address you directly) or participate at all, if you didn't want to.<br />
<br />
To check for upcoming event dates near you, check the pop-up locations on their <a href="http://www.theblindcafe.com/" target="_blank">webpage</a> and consider signing up for the mailing list. If you've got an open mind, you'll love having dinner at the Blind Cafe.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPj_Q9M8VtmCRK6dmLAN64Ei4LT7K0mEONHeQ5d13TSsEsvj7al451NiQI-DtRWTVVfm20PdZLFMAIexnfo9ZTdZeO1M8aXnEU0ghEHLquAkB4w3TFQcsxM-Ikyx8gYCbGxW7LayAuMBun/s1600/theme.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="253" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPj_Q9M8VtmCRK6dmLAN64Ei4LT7K0mEONHeQ5d13TSsEsvj7al451NiQI-DtRWTVVfm20PdZLFMAIexnfo9ZTdZeO1M8aXnEU0ghEHLquAkB4w3TFQcsxM-Ikyx8gYCbGxW7LayAuMBun/s320/theme.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Maybe it's from a childhood cartoon (<a href="https://youtu.be/CWnWwN1z_UM" target="_blank">Animaniacs</a>, <a href="https://youtu.be/2HCjQbKowUo" target="_blank">Gummi Bears</a>, <a href="https://youtu.be/CMU2NwaaXEA" target="_blank">Duck Tales</a>), or one from middle school (<a href="https://youtu.be/L2_CaKt_Khs" target="_blank">Full House</a>, <a href="https://youtu.be/1nCqRmx3Dnw" target="_blank">Fresh Prince of Bel-Air</a>, <a href="https://youtu.be/jr0Lng3mhL4" target="_blank">Saved by the Bell</a>), or a grown-up show (<a href="https://youtu.be/Niu9Zmrx0p8" target="_blank">Friends</a>, <a href="https://youtu.be/b9GilKnpiv0" target="_blank">The Office</a>, <a href="https://youtu.be/TzJm9vTCff8" target="_blank">Law & Order</a>). It's tough to pick a favorite, really, with so many great theme songs over the years.<br />
<br />
And I recognize it's not a completely objective competition, as there are a myriad of factors which make TV theme songs memorable/catchy. Some have words, some don't. Some are written specifically for the show, others are borrowed from the pop charts. Nostalgia for the show plays a big part, too.<br />
<br />
With the recent passing of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garry_Shandling" target="_blank">Garry Shandling</a> (RIP), I was reminded of what I consider to be the best TV theme song of all time:<br />
<br />
<center>
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/8cWbkWTYwTw" width="420"></iframe></center>
<br />
It's just perfect. So goofy, so direct in its purpose. It fit the show perfectly.<br />
<br />
So what is your favorite TV theme song? And why?<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiayz7fZ87cqmEuHDln3ozc3f5EBmv6HhaKmJp-b6rchS05GElKX3ZraG2S3kGiEuPyCZbYkgYvOZzsHX8GrVjQ8LAz9Y5b_aqFOMgpA3hEnr_kzeDnIfU-pnwpV7YdLF7Tixuzr4OmvuGH/s1600/easter2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiayz7fZ87cqmEuHDln3ozc3f5EBmv6HhaKmJp-b6rchS05GElKX3ZraG2S3kGiEuPyCZbYkgYvOZzsHX8GrVjQ8LAz9Y5b_aqFOMgpA3hEnr_kzeDnIfU-pnwpV7YdLF7Tixuzr4OmvuGH/s400/easter2.jpg" width="263" /></a></div>
<br />
Either way, I hope you enjoy your celebrations!<br />
<br />
Here's a heart-warming video of small animals:<br />

PS Doesn't that music just make you so happy? Or is it just me? Perfectly fits the scene.<br />

<br />
If you've never seen the Shakespeare play of "Julius Caesar", do yourself a favor and find a local production. It's about much more than just Caesar's murder.<br />
<br />
But if you just want to watch a little theatrical stabbing, here's the scene from my friend's (all-female cast) production of the play:<br />
<center>
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/0h5zkpcuZAE" width="560"></iframe></center>
<br />
<br />
One last piece of advice today: watch your back!<br />
<br />
<b>***Note: this is a joke post. Please do not go out and stab anyone, today or any day.</b><br />

<br />
And I love pi (π).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqmk-0uqDY5pRDMWUE6N3fc3jtSlqx6WLxTvZsLRlb0madiOpWghkEVM9YrRRTcweWyiWwCoG1RoMK8K3rJeL_LRWxVxUwM3DWWluhPSikT2Z_ELymKp7Zqdhe4xodqkMcunVXXSNTterF/s1600/pi-day-61.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqmk-0uqDY5pRDMWUE6N3fc3jtSlqx6WLxTvZsLRlb0madiOpWghkEVM9YrRRTcweWyiWwCoG1RoMK8K3rJeL_LRWxVxUwM3DWWluhPSikT2Z_ELymKp7Zqdhe4xodqkMcunVXXSNTterF/s640/pi-day-61.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
What can I say, I'm a bit of a math nerd.<br />
<br />
Most of us remember that Pi is ~3.14.... (etc forever), but that's about it.<br />
<br />
If you're a little rusty on what the term Pi is, here's a handy video explaining the concept using the delicious similarly-named food.<br />
<br />
<center>
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Zbnm0zuWfvk" width="560"></iframe></center>
<br />
It's a simplistic and short video, which I appreciate, even if it doesn't explain what Pi does and how it's useful in the world of mathematics.<br />
But then, it'd probably be better to get someone with a higher math pay grade to do that, anyway.<br />
<br />
Happy Pi Day, all!<br />

<br />
I've had my previous bikes for years, but they aren't so great for group rides or long distances (that aren't triathlon training or races).<br />
<br />
So now I've got a new road bike, and she's a real beauty.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh66kv6rKVwEHRWGGmk7fcIOtgBDVYV5tCcHYYiCOX2SahoE1AlQ_HZsJ6ucfAbK6bAet-R7pETKNLsqogUFoeGfdMLLlIRTe14pqqOTBmWI0Q36I0YxviOp1IiPYTJF7vugJvm2yG8C8vk/s640/blogger-image--1990262771.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh66kv6rKVwEHRWGGmk7fcIOtgBDVYV5tCcHYYiCOX2SahoE1AlQ_HZsJ6ucfAbK6bAet-R7pETKNLsqogUFoeGfdMLLlIRTe14pqqOTBmWI0Q36I0YxviOp1IiPYTJF7vugJvm2yG8C8vk/s640/blogger-image--1990262771.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Coincidentally (or maybe not so much), her nickname is going to be Black Beauty.<br />
Like the classic <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Black-Beauty-Childrens-Thrift-Classics/dp/0486275701" target="_blank">book by Anna Sewell</a> and the subsequent <a href="https://youtu.be/-qCPMP4mNcQ" target="_blank">movie</a>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWjWExKtEDKSJvRS4cHbRPtWk1MCOsna5fN_hLVhrLH8nO7krL7CyqBV9UURaGYHodUY-7ZkLOsSj2gx52fgZDI84qUwq-LWZ0G55eSi5795JOmk8E0mzI1XiTWBl0epJXrIUhhhow3YT9/s1600/Black_beauty.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWjWExKtEDKSJvRS4cHbRPtWk1MCOsna5fN_hLVhrLH8nO7krL7CyqBV9UURaGYHodUY-7ZkLOsSj2gx52fgZDI84qUwq-LWZ0G55eSi5795JOmk8E0mzI1XiTWBl0epJXrIUhhhow3YT9/s640/Black_beauty.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
We went on our inaugural ride (a short one) last night, and the bikes felt light as a feather.<br />
Anna hasn't had a true road bike before, and she was shocked at how easy it was to go fast.<br />
<br />
Can't wait to get out on some longer rides and train for a century ride later this summer!<br />

Naturally, that means I'm going to do some different hairstyles.<br />
<br />
Recently, I went with this one:<br />

<br />
What do you think? Remind you of anything?<br />
<br />
The first thing my co-workers said was, "Hello, <b>Barry Melrose</b>." (ESPN hockey analyst)<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The man, the myth, the hair.</td></tr>

Looking in the mirror, I was reminded of a <b>ski jump</b>.<br />

<br />
For a while, I was amused to see "the Donald" leading polls and winning state primaries.<br />
<br />
Now I'm frightened to imagine a world where he actually has a shot at being POTUS.<br />
<br />
Last night John Oliver, host of <a href="http://www.hbo.com/last-week-tonight-with-john-oliver" target="_blank">Last Week Tonight</a> on HBO, shared some facts about the presidential hopeful, illuminating his record and verifying the claims made by "the Donald" and his supporters.<br />
<br />
I could list Mr. Oliver's points, but it's probably better/easier to just share the video. Yes, the segment is a bit lengthy, but it's worth the watch. If these 20 minutes can educate even one honest voter (and I think it could help many), then America will be better off for it.<br />
<br />
<center>
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/DnpO_RTSNmQ" width="560"></iframe></center>
<br />
<br />
As a bonus, Mr. Oliver shared a tidbit about the previous last name of "the Donald". His family's previous last name was Drumpf.<br />
<br />
Mr. Oliver also started a hashtag (<span style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 18.6px; text-indent: 2px; white-space: pre;">#MakeDonaldDrumpfAgain</span>) and shared a webpage (<a href="http://www.donaldjdrumpf.com/">http://www.donaldjdrumpf.com/</a>) to get a Chrome extension which will correct the word "T-rump" (without the -) in your Google Chrome browser to be "Drumpf".<br />
<br />
For sure, my news day has been much more interesting and entertaining since I installed the Drumpfinator Chrome Extension. Here's what it looks like when I Google "Donald T-rump" (again, without the -):<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjltILdMga-0rHHPEDT1k2fRoLGScAjgYRYl0i9W_p2U_t0DsriEE8daarVS9oj5zAGvq5yJG3jlf9BWUjkjhKW0iqa9D3YmA4_3CwwVCwgAl12JZjTTtZNIq4KZprQD0P4Ku0663NrY-TU/s1600/drumpf.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="518" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjltILdMga-0rHHPEDT1k2fRoLGScAjgYRYl0i9W_p2U_t0DsriEE8daarVS9oj5zAGvq5yJG3jlf9BWUjkjhKW0iqa9D3YmA4_3CwwVCwgAl12JZjTTtZNIq4KZprQD0P4Ku0663NrY-TU/s640/drumpf.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The rest of this presidential race will be easier to observe, now that this candidate's name will show correctly in my internet browser. Thanks, John Oliver!<br />

<br />
<b>The baby orangutan body slam.</b><br />
<br />
Check it out (actual body slam at ~1:00, but mommy-baby cuteness throughout):<br />

Or if you just want to watch the body slam over and over, here's my Vine for it:<br />

<br />
But I'm happy to declare that Bernie Sanders has my support for the Democratic nomination.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_3kHAzy9tJlSdl8mgiDCugih3jGjW_3A3P1WJdXmaNmTiefdn9VErr3iCBnwJjiDwcfm-QZsjpJq06Vd2rXiOhJC2QDbmb_bHr4N-V7VVe9VpA4PAvpEI_Z2Ul3dF-oWfPdBglfOPOsVJ/s1600/bernie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_3kHAzy9tJlSdl8mgiDCugih3jGjW_3A3P1WJdXmaNmTiefdn9VErr3iCBnwJjiDwcfm-QZsjpJq06Vd2rXiOhJC2QDbmb_bHr4N-V7VVe9VpA4PAvpEI_Z2Ul3dF-oWfPdBglfOPOsVJ/s320/bernie.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
As with all the candidates, there are some points of Bernie's that I'm not 100% on board with, or that I don't understand the details and steps to achieve his promises/goals.<br />
<br />
What I do know, is that I agree with <b><u>how</u></b> and <b><u>why</u></b> he wants to get things done.<br />
<br />
Bernie wants to represent the American people, not just the wealthy constituents and their lobbyists.<br />
Sadly, that is a refreshing change from what we've become used to in U.S. politics.<br />
<br />
Bernie has been saying the same things for decades of his political service.<br />
His views on equality and rights haven't changed over time, based on pollsters findings or recent campaign contributors.<br />
<br />
To be fair, I'll admit I don't know everything about every candidate.<br />
There are pros and cons of each person seeking their party's nomination.<br />
<br />
But as of now, Bernie's got my vote.<br />

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Anna has been very supportive in my musical aspirations for 2016, and one really fun way we're going for my goal is learning songs we can sing together and later add in guitar and/or a djembe drum. Here's our first recorded effort (a cappella, for now), just in time for Valentines Day:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<center>
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/6rLTRSTD-vY" width="560"></iframe></center>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It's a great song, originally performed by Robby Hecht and Caroline Spence.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What song should we learn next? </div>
<div>
We have a couple in mind, and we're happy to consider your suggestions.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And have a happy Valentines Day weekend, everybody!</div>

It's been quite the comprehensive ad campaign, and it's got me excited to see Ryan Reynolds play this anti-hero on the big screen.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs7XYn-M_3_ymQkVozXI3TBUpF7KQKXy_I7zUNwQQ6x_kcwPuq57-tbpHMg-J5AyVr0XHZx1um5z7FpQXD_9LxKgcNvV635RMwTWrlpwUSRULf_6DvtQz0foSr_-ghlbF4YCfv_NG8Avrv/s1600/deadpool.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs7XYn-M_3_ymQkVozXI3TBUpF7KQKXy_I7zUNwQQ6x_kcwPuq57-tbpHMg-J5AyVr0XHZx1um5z7FpQXD_9LxKgcNvV635RMwTWrlpwUSRULf_6DvtQz0foSr_-ghlbF4YCfv_NG8Avrv/s640/deadpool.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Comic book readers know that this isn't the kind of movie to take your parents to, or your kids, or a significant other (in some/most cases). Deadpool knows this, too, which is why he even posted this letter to parent fans:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Pretty smart, if you ask me.<br />
Though I'm not concerned about this one getting a sequel, because it's already getting solid reviews.<br />
<br />
And I'm told the post-credits scene is worth staying around for...<br />
<br />
See you at the movies!<br />
<br />
PS If you've seen it already, let me know in the comments what you thought.<br />
And no spoilers until at least after the first weekend!<br />

<br />
Like a 2+ year-long minute.<br />
<br />
But it's time to get back to writing and sharing my thoughts.<br />
<br />
A lot has changed in my life since late 2013.<br />
If you know me offline, you probably have a good idea of the big ticket items.<br />
If not, maybe we'll meet someday and I'll fill you in.<br />
<br />
Now it's time to move forward, so I'm getting back in the saddle again.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Yes, it's probably just based on a simple date in my Google+ profile (yes, I have one. no, I don't use it. yes, I'm still ashamed to have one), but it's nonetheless indicative of the coming SkyNet takeover.<br />
<br />
And yet, I still like that it was a screen just for me.<br />
<br />
So thanks, Google, for personalizing my internet experience yesterday.<br />
And even more, thanks to all of you who made it a great day by wishing me a happy birthday through calls, texts, in-person greetings, and Facebook wall posts!<br />
<br />
I'm who I am today because of all of you! Muchas gracias!<br />

Another amazing week of Pie Night and Thanksgiving festivities. And too much to write, so I'll sum it up mainly with pictures.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For another great recap of these lovely holiday events, see <a href="http://mesmyth.blogspot.com/2013/11/thanksgiving-and-pie-night-2013.html" target="_blank">my sister's blogpost</a> about them.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><u>Pie Night Prep</u></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can't have a good Pie Night if you don't prepare properly.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So we made a few pies (a chocolate pecan and a cranberry-ginger pear).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<b><u>Pie Night</u></b><br />
<br />
I think our chocolate pecan and cranberry-ginger pear made their first flavor appearances at this year's Pie Night.<br />
Both did well (meaning they got eaten quickly), but the chocolate pecan was the first gone, and I'm not surprised, because it was absolutely delicious.<br />

May the families of those who have perished by blessed, and may our active duty all return home safely. <br />

May we all strive for peace at home and abroad so fewer and maybe eventually none have to put their lives on the line.<br />

That's the song played by the ballpark while a player is walking to the plate or the pitcher's mound, and I believe each guy gets to pick their own tune.<br />
<br />
Some current players have pretty awesome songs, as shown in <b><a href="http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1081541-top-25-walk-up-songs-in-baseball" target="_blank">this BleacherReport list</a></b>.<br />
Pretty cool that James Shields had Rammstein and then went to Kid Cudi, and Nyjer Morgan uses a Michael Jackson song, and Lance Berkman has Johnny Cash to get amped up.<br />
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Closer_(baseball)" target="_blank">Closers</a> appear to have the best selections, including <a href="http://youtu.be/6vOr82QepH0" target="_blank">Mariano Rivera with Metallica's "Enter Sandman"</a>.<br />
<br />
With the World Series starting tonight between the St Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox, we'll get to hear on the biggest stage which songs the players on this year's two best teams choose.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://theakumalian.com/images/2013/10%20Oct%202013/2013WSLogo%5B1%5D.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="238" src="http://theakumalian.com/images/2013/10%20Oct%202013/2013WSLogo%5B1%5D.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
So I started wondering, which song would I select for myself?<br />
And what song would my friends and family choose?<br />
<br />
I had to go with <b>"Fuel" by Metallica</b>. Such a good pump-up song!<br />

<br />
I think some of these suggestions were in jest, but I had to share them anyway since they're funny.<br />
<br />
Most of them would certainly be good walk-up songs, and they'd get the batter pumped up.<br />
And I love seeing the personality of the person reflected in what they chose.<br />
<br />
What song would you pick?<br />
<br />
So let's play ball! Batter up!<br />

</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Which is why this is a good time to share the story of the first time I heard one of her songs.</div>
<div>
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------</div>
<div>
I was serving a mission for the <a href="http://www.lds.org/?lang=eng" target="_blank">LDS Church</a> in Guatemala, and I'd been there for around a year.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
On a Mormon mission, usually the leadership moves you to a new city with a new companion every 4-6 months. After two months in the <a href="http://www.mtc.byu.edu/" target="_blank">Provo MTC</a>, I'd been in the coastal city Escuintla to start (#1); then Boca del Monte, a suburb of the capital (#2); and now I was serving in a mountain city, Sololá (#3).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg42elHj1HaebMFKPGL_X10V7AlYH4vZ1PWNCkjDJkWB0gBt6h0oPGaNd8_a_fbxtr_D5ax-xwJfOBD_jxucygfrkrKdtI6exfbcoTcBTIBskKkYrW6XTQZ01pWU8DgzKGmg09-paRPl1_K/s1600/Guate.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg42elHj1HaebMFKPGL_X10V7AlYH4vZ1PWNCkjDJkWB0gBt6h0oPGaNd8_a_fbxtr_D5ax-xwJfOBD_jxucygfrkrKdtI6exfbcoTcBTIBskKkYrW6XTQZ01pWU8DgzKGmg09-paRPl1_K/s640/Guate.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
When we needed to travel farther than we could walk, we'd either hitchhike in the back of a pick-up truck for a small fee, or use the public transportation--otherwise known as the famed "chicken buses".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-z6nqHzlrE0U/UHqZ3M4Gy5I/AAAAAAAAfBg/sDrqMbPGaGs/chicken-buses-9%25255B6%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-z6nqHzlrE0U/UHqZ3M4Gy5I/AAAAAAAAfBg/sDrqMbPGaGs/chicken-buses-9%25255B6%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="350" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Beautiful, aren't they?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Anyway, I'm getting sidetracked laying out the background info.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It was a Monday (our one-day-per-week off from proselyting), and my companion and I were riding on a chicken bus down to Panajachel to hang out with the other missionaries and eat lunch together.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Usually the buses play the radio, which was heavily skewed to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Tigres_del_Norte" target="_blank">Los Tigres del Norte</a>, Hermana Shaki (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shakira" target="_blank">Shakira</a>), and the Brothers <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man%C3%A1" target="_blank">Maná</a>, but a song came on during this ride which I'd never heard before. It was upbeat, catchy, and fun, so I asked my companion if he knew the band or who the guy singing was.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Yep, I asked about "the guy" singing.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We got a good laugh when he didn't know but someone sitting nearby informed us that it was <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celia_Cruz" target="_blank">Celia Cruz</a>, a <b>woman</b> famous in the Latin music scene for decades.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I heard that song a lot more during the rest of my time in Guatemala, and I always thought of the funny story of when I first heard it. I'd recommend searching for a song or two of hers on YouTube, like maybe "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=la+vida+es+un+carnaval+celia+cruz" target="_blank">La Vida Es Un Carnaval</a>".</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
Listening to it now, I can hear clearly that it's a lady, but I guess my ear wasn't tuned quite right that day.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Happy 88th birthday, Celia. RIP, and thanks for the memory!</div>

<br />
Some things you think you know, and then you learn you've been wrong or just a little off-base for years.<br />
<br />
My understanding of what a pony is fits into that category, and recently I was set straight when it came up in a group chat with my friends on Facebook.<br />
<br />
So here's the surprise about ponies.<br />
<br />
<b>Ponies are <u>not</u> baby horses.</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.animalfacts.lv2lvu.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/ponies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="295" src="http://www.animalfacts.lv2lvu.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/ponies.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
At least not anymore.<br />
The original meaning was from the French word for foal (a baby horse), but that's no longer the case.<br />
Maybe only a few of us had that idea wrong... but maybe a lot of us did.<br />
<br />
So here's the clarification:<br />
A pony is <b>not based on its age</b> (baby vs adult horse), but on<b> its size at adulthood</b>.<br />
<br />
1- Baby horses, under 1 year old, are foals.<br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;"> Bonus knowledge: male foals are colts, female foals are fillies. Grown males are stallions, grown females are mares.</span><br />
<br />
2- Ponies are small horses, measuring less than ~14 hands (just under 6 feet) tall at the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Withers" target="_blank">withers</a> (that's the top point where the neck meets the body).<br />
<br />
Mind... blown.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/98/Horse-and-pony.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/98/Horse-and-pony.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Many comparative pics, like this one, emphasize the size difference</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/images18/GalleryHorseJackAmiePonyJazzmineSaraRodeo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/images18/GalleryHorseJackAmiePonyJazzmineSaraRodeo.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
So next time you hear someone is "going to watch the ponies", you might wonder if they're really going to see small (yet grown-up) horses racing, or if they're using the term incorrectly.<br />
<br />
At least, I know that's what I'll wonder.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.mossmiata.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/the-more-you-know.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="290" src="http://www.mossmiata.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/the-more-you-know.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Ride 'em, cowboys and cowgirls!<br />

<br />
Oh wait, I guess <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beastie_Boys" target="_blank">Mike D, MCA, and Ad-Rock</a> didn't mean "ill" in the way I'm feeling it these days.<br />
My illin' requires the help of herbal remedies and medicines like these:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJSgnezzdFnTfJQPtAtMAIxT4jg73wfNIBTCzPhvMre0ebgUwSTa7iHmppvjTjoEn8z3m30Xg9v_6lcdNysoXmOUMcL0pXwfeoquuCbqXNJI6H-dFsNjwEo5PuVdvRkTO8280_xO32ba2W/s640/blogger-image-682439921.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJSgnezzdFnTfJQPtAtMAIxT4jg73wfNIBTCzPhvMre0ebgUwSTa7iHmppvjTjoEn8z3m30Xg9v_6lcdNysoXmOUMcL0pXwfeoquuCbqXNJI6H-dFsNjwEo5PuVdvRkTO8280_xO32ba2W/s640/blogger-image-682439921.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
And is it just me, or does having just a persistent cough and achy body almost seem worse than being completely sick and stuck in bed? Then at least I wouldn't have to get work done, right?<br />
<br />
Nah, I'd go crazy being unable to get outside at all.<br />
But I do hope all the supplements and teas get me better soon, because I've got fun weekend plans!<br />
